Effect of Photoperiod and Melatonin on Volume and Cellular Parameters of Testis in Pinealectomized Rats International Journal of Morphology
Akosman,Murat Sirri; Özdemir,Vural; Taskiran,Nihal; Akalan,Mehmet Aydin; Bülbül,Aziz.
Mammalian reproductive axis is regulated by the combination of three fundamental tissues of neuroendocrine system including hypothalamus, hypophysis and gonads. In recent years, pineal gland has been included in this axis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of 12L (Light):12D (Dark) photoperiod and melatonin administration (0.5 mg/kg/day; subcutaneously) on testicular volume and cellular parameters of testis at the pinealectomized (PE) rats. For this aim, twelve adult rats were firstly pinealectomized and then divided into two groups as GI and GII randomly. The GI rats served as control group and received only normal saline, whereas GII rats were the melatonin administered group. It was found that the total testicular volume,...

Effect of pinealectomy, adrenalectomy, pinealectomy plus adrenalectomy upon the quantification of spermatogenic cells of adult rats Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Castro,A.C.S.; Queiroz,G.F.; Nogueira,J.C.; Coimbra,C.C.; Reis,A.M.; Marubayashi,U.; Yamasaki,K..
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of pinealectomy, adrenalectomy and pinealectomy-adrenalectomy upon the quantification of spermatogenic cells of rats. As such, 32 adult Wistar rats with a mean body weight of 331.7± 15.5g were assigned into one of the following treatments: (a) a sham-operated control group, consisting of nine animals; (b) ten pinealectomized animals; (c) seven adrenalectomized animals and (d) six pinealectomized plus adrenalectomized animals. No significant differences were observed between groups for the following parameters: body, testes, prostate and seminal vesicle weights, seminiferous tubular diameter, number of cells per seminiferous tubular cross sections (primary spermatocytes at pachytene, round...

EVALUATION OF THE IMPLANTATION IN PINEALECTOMIZED AND/OR SUBMITTED TO THE CONSTANT ILLUMINATION RATS International Journal of Morphology
Coelho Teixeira,Álvaro Aguiar; Simões,Manuel de Jesus; Wanderley Teixeira,Valéria; Soares Júnior,José Maria.
In this paper we evaluated the morphologic and quantitative aspects of the implantations sites in uteruses of female pinealectomized and/or submitted to the constant illumination rats. The experimental groups were: I - normal female rats maintained in a clear/dark cycle of 12/12 hours, for two months, mated and euthanasiated in the 6th day of pregnancy (control); II - female sham-pinealectomized rats maintained in a clear/dark cycle of 12/12 hours, for two months, mated and euthanasiated in the 6th day of pregnancy (control); III - female pinealectomized rats, maintained in a clear/dark cycle of 12/12 hours, for two months, mated and euthanasiated in the 6th day of pregnancy; IV - normal female rats maintained in constant illumination for two months, mated...

Influence of the pineal gland on the physiology, morphometry and morphology of pancreatic islets in rats BJB
LIMA,L. M. B. de; REIS,L. C. dos; LIMA,M. A. de.
To investigate the influence of the pineal gland through melatonin secretion on the physiological and morphological parameters of pancreatic islets, we studied the plasma biochemistry and morphological and morphometric characteristics of the endocrine pancreas of male Wistar rats. The animals were distributed into five groups of ten rats each: NC - normal control group; NS - sham-operated group; Px (25) - pinealectomised group, studied 15-25 days after surgery; Px (70) - pinealectomised group, studied 60-70 days after surgery; ALX - alloxan monohydrate-treated group. Data are analyzed statistically by ANOVA and by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Although there was no significant difference in plasma glucose or insulin levels between the Px (25), Px (70) and NC...

MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE OVARIAN FOLLICLES IN PINEALECTOMIZED RATS International Journal of Morphology
Pereira dos Santos,Katharine Raquel; Coelho Teixeira,Álvaro Aguiar; da Silva Neto,Eulâmpio José; Teixeira,Valéria Wanderley; da Cunha,Franklin Magliano.
The present study had the objective of analyzing morphometrically the occupied area by the ovarian follicles in ovaries of pinealectomized female rats. To do so, 24 albino female rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were used, which were equally divided in the following groups: Group I sham-pinealectomized rats and kept in the light/dark cycle (12/12 hours), for three months; Group II pinealectomized rats and kept in the light/dark cycle (12/12 hours), for three months; Group III pinealectomized rats and kept in the absence of light for three months; Group IV sham-pinealectomized rats and kept in the absence of rats for three months. The results showed that the groups I and IV presented, respectively, average of 19,00 and 25,00, while groups II and III...

ULTRASTRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF PINEALECTOMY AND LACK OF LIGHT INFLUENCE OVER COLLAGEN IN THE ENDOMETRIUM OF RATS International Journal of Morphology
Pinto de Medeiros,Juliana; Wanderley Teixeira,Valéria; Aguiar Coelho Teixeira,Álvaro; Baratella Evêncio,Liriane; Evêncio Neto,Joaquim.
Some studies have shown that pinealectomized female rats present a large concentration of collagen fibers in the endometrium. The lack of light results in morphologic alterations in the uterine lamina propria and in the muscular layer, reducing thus the uterine weight. Therefore, this work aimed to analyze ultra-structurally the influence of melatonin in the remodeling of the collagen in the endometrium, in the estrus phase, in pinealectomized adult rats or submitted to lack of light. The experimental groups: I- sham-pinealectomized maintained in a clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours, during three months; II- pinealectomized rats maintained in a clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours, for three months; III- normal rats maintained in clear/dark cycle 12/12 hours for three...
